The purpose of this project, which France Télécom is spearheading, is to provide an open platform and middleware that allow connected urban services to be set up (automated public lighting, water, gas, and electricity control, parking lot management, pollution measurement, etc.). The Senscity project was born from the observation that M2M services in the city are too fragmented, owing to a solely vertical approach (i.e., specific infrastructure from start to finish). Senscity’s aim was to set up common building blocks for the captors/actuators network, and have them be based on open protocol that could potentially be standardized, as well as to provide a shared collection platform for M2M services. Seen from this angle, the project has clearly been successful, as evidenced by Orange and Veolia Eau making M2OCity.
